From the lyric ‘change tactics’ I pictured that the girl has
had to change many times to fit a certain scenario, this linked with the
abusive relationship narrative as it could be that she’s had to change how she
is around people so that she seems somewhat ‘normal’. It also means that
she is aware of what’s happening around her, she knows that something isn’t
right from the line ‘I’m sinking under soon I’ll have to throw my ore in’,
almost as if she is going to give up. However she is prepared for the worst as
when she says ‘soon I’ll have to’ this signifies that she knows and is ready
for anything to be thrown at her.
The next verse talks about her needing someone with her to
help her through it as she cannot do it alone. ‘So take my hand it’s easier to
row with two’ connoted to me that she is ready to let go of the old habit of
changing how she is around others to please people, she is tired and ready to
move on from her past. Yet in order to do this she needs the help of others,
she doesn’t want to be scared of letting others in and be free from the cage
she’s mentally been locked in.
In the 7th verse she seems to be talking about how she
doesn’t want to stop bettering herself, yet there is a constant need to have
someone there to help her do this, almost like a protective barrier that could
link to a new love interest.
I think that on the whole, the artist may have made the song
to signify that no one should ever feel afraid to let someone in. In the music
industry this could suggest that no artist should be afraid to collaborate with
others as it could widen their target audience. This song could act as the
barrier of artists thinking it's better to go along the road along and tough it
out, yet they may struggle to create their own music as there is no help from
anyone else.
This song could possibly be about letting go of old habits
that artists have and celebrating collaborating with differing genre
artists/bands. It is supposed to capture the moment of release and the weight
lifting from your shoulders from the excitement of trying and experimenting
with something new.
